When the clean air act became applicable in 1956 the number in solid fuel usage were restricted, gas fires began to come to the for front as they were a much cleaner option.

From 1956 onwards gas fire became very sellable heating products, with new technology in later years gas fires became more safer with the introduction of oxypilot this was a game changer as the new device would would impact the the fire to turn off when the oxygen levels fell below the required level.

For many years now gas fires have evolved from freestanding box type fires and then to gas coal effect fires these became very popular in UK house holds with very little heat out put and with a efficiency of around 30% to 40% meaning the majority of the heat from the fire would go up the chimney rather than in to the living space.
